Abbey Gardens

Abbey Gardens

The small shards of shingle crunch softly beneath my feet, The scent of soft, mint green grass whiffs past, and winds through the beautiful spring flowers, the petals dance gracefully in the wind and dew droplets shine like gems. Dark, gloomy clouds waltz through the golden, radiant heavens. The wind whistles in my ears and the sky blackens promising a gusty, stormy night. Water ripples and launches into motion, swaying backwards and forwards. Fragments of the stone walls fall, slowly wearing off after the war. I tilt my head back and the bright, blazing sun materializes, bounces of the crystal glass windows of the ancient chapel. Sunset gradually sets in displaying dazzling layers of marmalade orange, blood red and sunshine yellow. Walking back through the gardens, I take a deep calming profound breath and let the last of the warmth consume me.

Term 3 writing Sample

The black and white striped tiger spots he next unwilling victim, a white-tailed deer munching away at a twig he found laying on solitarily on the ground, things are scarce for deer now.
Prowling, growling the tiger slowly stalks his way through the long wavy dry grass. He bares his teeth, long sharp three inch canines shine through, white as the gleaming fur that surrounds him. His fur glows bouncing off the rays of the bright glinting orange sun. His beautiful grey eyes are stormy like the sea on a dangerous night, they search for risks, he finds none and stealthily sneaks around a brown shrivelled trunk that had fallen involuntary from its rightful place.
I watch in awe as the smart predator decides where and when to attack. The deer’s ears suddenly prick up sensing danger, I retreat slightly not wanting to be found.
The white-tailed deer’s spots on his back look like fallen snowflakes gradually melting, he gracefully looks up, lifting his nose in the air, his dark well-experienced eyes search the area, seeing the threat he bolts, running in short quick sprints covering around thirty metres in a single leap. Though the deer had a reasonable head start the white Siberian tiger was able to run a lot faster and was slowly gaining on the deer, his paws pounding the hard ground.
The deer, trying its hardest to escape the intimate danger fails and the tiger pounces spreading his thick furry paws and lands on the deer before proceeding to roll over holding the deer to the ground.
His canines expand even more before sinking his teeth into the flesh of his poor victim, I stand to watch amazed at the lone tiger gone stray from his pack. After his meal he walks away, satisfied from his kill for today.

Christmas Tree Technology Challenge

This challenge was about creating, building a christmas tree to help us bring out our inner creativity
Aspects we were being judged on whether our tree had four branches, if it could stand up on its own and we had to include all of our materials.
My team members included of Emily, Lola, Manasseh, Baden, Benedict and I.
The strength of our team was working together and communicating well.
We won, and next time I would decorate and modify the tree.

Term 4 Writing Assessment

Term 4 Writing Assessment

Today we completed our Term 4 writing assessment. We had 5 minutes to plan, 30 minutes to complete our first draft and 5 minutes to proof read. Here Is what I wrote…

Term 4 Writing Assessment
Name: Charlotte Castell-Bateman Date: 18/10/16

What I Did Well

Think of a time when you did something really well. Write to recount that time.

Write about:
  • When and where you did something special
  • Who was with you
  • What you did, (think about the order you did things)
  • How you felt and why you felt this way

Remember to:
  • Choose your words carefully
  • Write in full sentences
  • Take care with your spelling and punctuation
  • Give your writing a title only if you want to
  • Check your work: read through and fix any mistakes you find.

Recount:

I jogged slowly onto the pitch taking deep breaths as I did so. Confidence was coursing through me and my spirit was high. This should be easy I thought to myself quietly, but never underestimate the opposition. I took my place as a right half with my stick ready in hand, I swiftly moved into position waiting, waiting for the referee to blow the whistle to signal that the game begins. I look round at my teammates, them in the same position with a deep look of concentration on their faces. I looked towards Charlotte who was staring at the ball mindlessly, It was the opposition's ball.

The opposition was no longer our friends but our competitors and we were determined to win this fight. The whistle blew and the game began, the opposition took the ball and attempted to pass back to her team mate only to fail when Tessa intercepted, skillfully dodging all the players that tried to stop her, I ran behind her ready to back her up if she lost the ball, she didn’t, she made it into the half circle only to find her way blocked, she quickly passed it to drew who turned on her side to shoot the goal, it shot pass the goalie and made the unmistakable sound of the ball smacking against the back of the goal. We all screamed in happiness as she came back with a ginormous smile on her face. I patted her back and we all went back into position.

It was almost half time and we were winning 5-1. The ball was coming my way and I ran to either intercept or tackle, it ended up being a tackle, I briskly took the ball of off Arianna and ran up the sideline to find a teammate to pass it to. Everyone was being marked even though they desperately tried to get free. Someone came charging towards me going in for a tackle, I panted heavily and put my training and all my hours of hard work into action, I flipped my stick over and went in for a reverse turn, I sidestepped to the right with the ball and…. YES! I made it! I saw that Tessa was free and speedily passed it to her. I backed up again covering her incase anything went wrong. We had just gotten yet another goal and all of my team had extremely high hopes.

The whistle made a loud shriek signalling half time and we all jogged over to the sideline waiting for praise and advice. We took a hasty gulp of water and moved back onto the pitch. This was a good game…….. Our faces were red and our legs were aching but we still pushed to get the last goal…. Our 10th goal.  Charlotte sped toward the goal raised her stick and did a sloth hit at the goal, it bounced off the edges and made it in! We had down it! We had one the game! We all got into a line and high fived the opposing team with a good game here and there. We all practically skipped over to the dug out and flopped onto the benches with our muscles screaming at us to stop, we collected our things and walked towards our parents ready for a good night's sleep!

We did a water experiment,
This is what we did.

Tools for young people

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nmj4Euwxv4

1. Before you start reading, what is your prediction about what the tools for young Change Makers might be?

They have to have a good idea of what they are doing, they have to be hard-working, resilient, and dedicated and people to help and encourage you.

2. What are some of the world's problems/issues spoken of very early on in the speech?

Our oceans are on fire, our natural habitats are collapsing and wars are being fought over natural resources.

3. Service is one of the Badges in the Gold Awards and Honours Badges. What are some aspects of service you have heard other people being involved with in Ms Beaumont's presentations at assembly?

Helping with the school and community, Helping and doing things for other people.

4. If young people are provided the tools and resources they can lead positive community change. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why/why not

Yes, because they can be more motivated to do what they want to, having the resources can help and make it easier and changing the community would inspire more people to make differences.

5. What are the current environment issues in Hawke's Bay you can think of?

There is lots and lots of litter everywhere, on the beach, local park and even outside your house. The situation with the water was a major issue and we need to prevent that from happening again.

6. "Instead of asking why, young people ask why not?" Can you think of a situation or scenario where this has been true for you?

Mostly it has been deciding whether I wan't to do something or if I don't.

7. Empowerment is one of the biggest tools young people need. Explain what this concept means.

Empowerment means is to authorise, so in this term it probably means to encourage and to help, to give them permission.

Tinfoil sculptures

For art we made a Tinfoil sculptures, this is mine.
We had a 30x30 piece of tinfoil, we halved the bottom bit and ruled from the bottom up to 12.5cm and the top bit into thirds and ruled up 12.5 on each.
On the halves we made legs and made them the right length. For the thirds we made a head out of the middle one and arms out of the two outside ones. The sculpture had to be doing something, so mine is paddle boarding. We then traced around the outline onto a coloured piece of paper a made it a shadow colouring it in, in black.

Yesterday, we were very lucky to have Garth  McVicar come and talk to everyone in Sheppard House. He talked briefly about growing up in NZ, the influence his parents and community had, turning him into the person he is today, and that he loves what he does. Since becoming a father to four daughters, he was concerned about the homicides that were continuing to increase in New Zealand. After deciding that he had enough, the Sensible Sentencing Trust was formed and Garth has never looked back. Crime rates for physical assaults, homicides and murder have continued to die down since the SST was formed. He is still concerned about the children in New Zealand that are losing their lives at an alarming rate. We were a wonderful audience, asking questions and having to take a turn at being a judge and deciding on appropriate sentences for some different crimes. We concluded with some very thoughtful questions and responses from Garth. Consider carefully what he thinks are important skills and attributes for any Change Maker, (or Change Agent as he refers to it).

Cross Country

My goal for cross country this year is 15 minutes or less. I plan on achieving this by pushing myself, practicing and trying really hard. Today our training involved 'beat my partner' I didn't beat my partner because I got pushed over by hattie (on accident) and fell in the mud. I got a score of 20 minutes.

Riley Letter

For our Writing we wrote a letter to Riley someone that's helping raise money for Cure Kids, This is mine!

Charlotte Castell-Bateman
Havelock North Intermediate School,

Havelock North
Tuesday 26th July 2016,

Kia ora Riley,

Hi my name is Charlotte. I am twelve and I go to Havelock North Intermediate. I am an only child and I love art. I live in Havelock North but was born in England. I have no family here and get to see them every 5 years, I also play Hockey and Netball.

For Term three we are learning about Change Makers from all over the world. We read what you did and decided to send this letter to you. A change maker is someone that has made a difference in the world or their community. YOU are a changemaker!

Once I read the newspaper I thought that it was a very thoughtful and brave thing to do. With all of the fundraising and spreading the message through the community you are sure to get lots of support and money for everybody at Cure Kids. Instead of reaching your goal of $100 you exceeded that and reached $378, I hope you are able to fundraise more!

Again what you have done is incredible and if there were more people like you I’m sure the world would be a better place. I wish you all the best and that Toby gets better and everybody else that you are willing to help. I hope that you reach your goal and enjoy your last years at primary!

Kind Regards
Charlotte Castell-Bateman

The Body Clock

Have you ever experienced jet lag? That extreme tiredness after a long flight across different time zones? Jet lag is to do with the body clock and how it adapts in different time zones and countries. What sleep problems are related to problems with your body clock?  Well jet lag is when you cross different time zones and disrupts your body clock. You have sleep problems because your body has not adjusted to the new time zone, your body thinks that you’re still in your old time zone. For example if you fly from Chicago to Rome you cross seven different time zones, meaning that Rome is seven hours ahead of Chicago. So when you land in Rome at 6 o'clock in the morning, your body still thinks you're in Chicago at 11 0’clock the previous night, your body wants to sleep but in Rome the day is only just starting.
The body’s “biological clock” or 24 hour cycle can be affected by light or darkness, which can make the body think it’s time to sleep or wake up. The 24 hour body clock controls functions such as sleeping and walking, body temperature, the balance of body fluids and other body functions such as when you're hungry. Sleep is controlled by the sleep/wake homeostasis and the circadian biological clock. Homeostatic control mechanisms have at least three interdependent components: a receptor, integrating center, and effector. The receptor senses environmental stimuli, sending the information to the integrating center. The integrating center, signals an effector (e.g. muscles or an organ) to respond to the stimuli.
Positive feedback enhances or accelerates output created by an activated stimulus, another good example of a positive feedback mechanism is blood clotting. Once a vessel is damaged, platelets start to cling to the injured site and release chemicals that attract more platelets. The platelets continue to pile up and release chemicals until a clot is formed.
Negative feedback brings a system back to its level of normal functioning such as adjusting blood pressure, metabolism, and body temperature. The control of blood sugar by insulin is another good example of a negative feedback mechanism. When blood sugar rises, receptors in the body senses a change. In turn, the control center (the pancreas) secretes insulin into the blood effectively lowering blood sugar levels. Once blood sugar levels reach homeostasis, the pancreas stops releasing insulin. Every organ in the body contributes to homeostasis. A complicated set of chemical, thermal, and neural factors interact in complex ways, both helping and making it difficult for the body while it works to maintain homeostasis. Certain foods and drinks such as bananas, dates, nut butters, seeds, tuna, turkey, yoghurt and milk and foods high in carbohydrates, may help encourage drowsiness and sleep. Other foods such as bacon, ham, pepperoni, eggplant, raspberries, avocado, nuts and soy sauce, may have the opposite effect and keep you awake at night.
There are lots of parts and organs that help the body clock work, and these are only a few, so we come to the conclusion that the body clock plays a very important part in our body.

Facts about the body

For term 2 we are studying the human machine (body).

For inquiry we had to do a graffiti wall and place one fact about the human on it so Miss Hooper could staple them on the wall to make it look like one huge brick wall, here are my three fact:

Leaf Art

As it is Autumn, we thought we would use some of the leaves, sticks and other natural products found on the ground to create some leaf animals.  First we decided on our animal or mythical creature, then we planned out the leaves we would need to create our artwork.  Once we collected our leaves we glued them on to the paper (some required hot glue guns) and then presented our art.

This is my whack a cat game that I created using scratch it's a coding game. Press the green flag to start and the red stop button to stop.

Orienteering

We have been learning about co-ordinates, reading maps, compass bearings and using an atlas.

On Tuesday afternoon we had the opportunity to partake in orienteering with the Hawkes bay Orienteering club. They set up two courses around the school.

The first course was the easiest and we all completed this without an issue.

The second course was a bit more complicated and most definitely tested our map reading skills.

Static Image Homework

This is my Static Image Homework I used green felt and bows, I shaped the crosses in the shape of coffins and carefully cut the feet out and made a path with them.
At the top is a red poppy with facts about WW1 on it, I used a cardboard sky and stuck some soldiers in front of it to make it look like they were trekking up the hills and put "Lest We Forget" in remembrance.

ANZAC Slang

This my ANZAC slang powtoon. We had to put ANZAC slang in sentences and then explain what it means.

Kei Te Pehea Koe?

During Te Reo lessons we have been learning about how to greet each other, ask how we are and respond with how we are feeling. We wrote the scripts to show  about our learning and then act out the script in the Media room. In the media room we used the Macs to edit the video footage and create IMovies.
Unfortunately my video didn't work so this is someone else's finished product

Kei Te Pehea Koe means how are you?

Music

For my music I did my presentation on P!nk, I hope you enjoy.

ANZAC: Dulce et Decorum Est

For writing we have been reconstructing a poem following the structure of Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen.
Miss Hooper read us instructions and we constructed our poem about ANZAC and the war.

Here is my Poem:

Fighting For My Country

I doubled over in pain as I coughed and spluttered everywhere,
My fellow fighters collapsing in exhaustion and frustration
I pushed my way through the agonizing pain, the guns and bomb explosions slowly fading away,
Trying to get to safety, I have finally escaped from the front line
I peered at the men more closely now I see horrible cuts and bruises as
I echo the soldiers around me, stumbling like drunken men,
our old tattered uniform ripped Into shreds and our boots were lost in the muddy bank,
We were all too tired to think, then suddenly a unexpected smell takes us over, clouding our minds.

Gas, gas, quickly! We all stumble and we lunge for our helmets,
I grab hold of mine and yank it out of my heavy bag and stuff it awkwardly on my head,
One poor man starts staggering and moaning as the gas slowly makes it’s way into the man's lungs,
he chokes, falls over and the gas moves stealthily around him, it then glides to it’s next victim.
The gas is blindingly think now, it weaves itself around us so I can’t see the soldier for the gas,
I desperately look around trying to find someone that hasn't been covered.

The man that I thought had died suddenly came charging toward me as the gas swirls all around him making it hard for him to see and extremely difficult to breath,I feel very helpless, I know he’s a goner.

His face is green as the vines that are winding their way up the path on either side of us, I threw him into the wagon, you can imagine stepping slowly behind the man in the wagon, his eyes rolling to the back of his head and as his face starts turning white as a sheet,
can you imagine feeling all the remorse and grief that you would feel burning strongly on the inside.
I listened to the horrible sound of him spluttering blood everywhere as the jolts on every little bump,
The sickening gurgling and moaning as the blood swims in his mouth and lungs,
The nasty green mucus coming up from his from his insides,
It’s a sound you would never ever want to hear again.
If you have seen the horrific things that I have only beared to witness,
You would never utter the words to the young or for that matter the old and crippled,
“It’s glorious to die for your country”
And those are the horrors that I am faced with for the rest of my life.

Monday 4 April 2016

ANZAC Art

For our ANZAC art we had to find a picture (about ANZAC) and place it on a google docs that Miss Hooper had shared with everyone in our class.
We printed them and cut carefully around the shape that we chose we then stuck it on a black piece of paper and keeping the surrounding black paper that we cut the shape out from. We stuck the black shape onto a white piece of paper and we stuck a piece of white paper behind the surrounding black paper that we had cut out before.
This is my finished work!

Powtoon

We had to create a powtoon saying what P.I.E meant and some examples, this is my video that I created on powtoon.

Saturday 2 April 2016

Memorial Poem

For our writing we had to write an acrostic poem saying memorial this is my poem. I did 101 years because it's been 101 years since WW1 started on the first 1 I did all the flags on the winning side and on the second 1 I did all the flags on the losing side and in the middle I did a poppy with Lest We Forget in a scroll underneath.

ANZAC Logo

For our ANZAC logo we had to create our own design about ANZAC, the colours, pictures and words. We had a choice to do it on our computer or paper, I chose paper.
First of all I drew the poppy in the middle of the page with a scroll underneath saying lest we forget, next I drew the 1 that has all the flags of the winning countries of WW1, I then drew the wreath that makes the last 0 and in the middle a little banner saying July 28th 1914 - November 11th 1918 on it, fourthly I drew the ANZAC title at the top with the words next to it saying what ANZAC stands for (Australia New Zealand Army Corps), afterwards I drew the little dip at the bottom of the paper with the little poppies and grass, then I wrote the words At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them, sixthly I did the big poppies on either side of the paper, lastly I coloured it all in choosing the colours of ANZAC. I chose these colours because: red is the colour of the poppies, I chose green for the battlefield and the colors of the soldier's uniform, and black for the guns and smoke around the soldiers.

Here is my piece of writing:
The Dragon Slayer

In a time when dragons threatened mankind, there was only one man who fought against them all.  His name is Tarragon. He and his brave battle horse Black Bull, roamed the desert in search of these terrifying monsters. But things don't always turn out as they should…

Tarragon was a mighty dragon slayer with dirty ginger hair and broad shoulders, he wasn’t very tall be he had a helmet made of steel with horns coming out of the top he was worthy to use a sword, he a a long pointy nose and a huge mouth for yelling, he has small beady eyes to see and hunt down the dragons, his hands are as huge as dustbins lids his legs are as thin as sticks. His huge chin and tiny ears make him look even more threatening he has thin pale lips, a short stubby neck makes him even more short, long white nails make it difficult for him to grasp his sword. He saves mankind from the terrible dragons that roamed around, the fearless man was a strong as an ox, he is a hardworking man who only gets a small amount of pay for his amazing skills he also keeps tally of his kills which is around 19.
